TSN Redesign - Case Study
Semester 5 user experience project with Dayna Nairn
The Problem
Being a “sports fan” is a pretty vague term. In general, being a sports fan means having a strong interest in a particular sport, team, or athlete. This can manifest itself in different ways – some sports fans won’t miss a single game, while some enjoy reading up on the latest news and developments, and others simply enjoy discussing sports with their friends. Since being a sports fan is so unique, so is the nature in which sports fans watch, listen, and read about sports as a whole is therefore also unique – but the TSN website doesn’t always reflect that.
As avid sports fans, we both found ourselves watching the world cup and constantly tracking our favourite sports teams on the TSN.com – and had similar frustrations with our experience. The website is clunky, the nav bar is unorganized, and there is no prioritization options for our favourite teams or a customized personal experience. As user interface designers, we were excited by the opportunity to improve a website we visit so often.

Objectives & Goals
Create a more personalized custom experience for users.
Improve the uniformity of the articles on the home page.
Update top navigation with something that is more usable and customizable.
Ensure women’s sports are not hidden away for users when not logged in (as it will be custom).
Our Process
We will collect data from other sports fans on their experience with the website through a user survey to evaluate the different ways in which the many types of sports fans may want to use the website to follow their favourite teams.
We will personally research new ways in which companies with immense amounts of data are able to sort it to be easily parsed in order to create an optimized user flow for TSN users through our redesign.
We will create sketches of the areas we would like to improve, create wireframes in figma, and prototype our final solution.
Quantitative Research
Survey Results
66%
users said they use TSN to follow their favourite team closely
83%
use the website on desktop vs. their mobile phone
Qualitative Research
Strong navigations we enjoy
Notion - options to drop down each section and pin your favourites to the top.
Apple News - we enjoy how the subsections are sorted into manageable groups (ie. channels & topics, following, suggested by Siri) to break up large amounts of sections.
Safari Bookmarks Bar - favourite bookmarks are inside a section that is pinned to the top and can be opened and closed quickly.
